Functional Capacity Evaluations 2025

An occupational therapy functional capacity evaluation (FCE) is a comprehensive assessment that determines a person’s physical abilities, work tolerances, and functional capabilities.

Purpose: To evaluate a person’s ability to perform job duties safely and effectively and determine their readiness to work.

Who performs: An occupational therapist.

Length: Typically 3-4 hours.

What’s included: For patients with physical conditions – A full body musculoskeletal assessment, standardized tests, exercises, simulated work tasks, and cognitive domains 
For people with mental health conditions – A full psychosocial assessment, standardised tests, cognitive and emotional domains, social functioning, communication skills, problem solving, planning, judgement.

What’s assessed: Physical, psychological and social components required to perform job tasks, job demands analysis, job matching.

What is a FCE used for: To determine if a person can return to work, cannot return to work, can return to work with restrictions, or needs accommodations or support in the workplace.


Who receives the results: The referring party, and other parties determined to have a legal right to the information.


An FCE can be beneficial for people who are: 
Unsure if they are ready to return to work after illness or injury.
Applying for disability benefits.
Seeking to get involved in volunteer or other productive activity.
Wanting to change occupations.
Wanting to support employees who are having difficulty due to medical conditions.
